Andrei Iancu confirmed by Senate to lead USPTO

February 10, 2018

As expected, Andrei Iancu was unanimously confirmed by the Senate to become the Under Secretary of Commerce for Intellectual Property, also known as the Director of the United States Patent and Trademark Office on Feb. 5, 2018. He replace Joe Matal who has been the unofficial acting director since the resignation of prior Director Michelle Lee. It is anticipated that Matal will become the Deputy Under Secretary of Commerce for Intellectual Property. The final vote in the Senate confirming Iancu was 94 to 0.

Iancu was the managing partner of Irell & Manella LLP and a member of its litigation and intellectual property practice groups. His practice was focused on intellectual property litigation, but also included other aspects of intellectual property, including patent prosecution, due diligence, and licensing. He has represented clients as plaintiff and defendant in technological fields including genetic testing, internet, medical devices, therapeutics, telephony, TV broadcasting, video game systems, and computer peripherals.
